The Grand Prize for Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Großer Preis des Mittelstandes) is ranking among Germany's most desired business prizes. Unlike for many other prizes, the jury selects the winners considering not only figures, innovations or jobs, but also the role of the enterprises in society. For the 29th time already, the foundation Oskar-Patzelt-Stiftung honours small- and medium-sized enterprises under the motto "Gemeinsam Zukunft sichern" (Jointly Securing the Future) in Düsseldorf this year.

No person or enterprise can apply himself/herself/itself for the prize, but needs to be nominated for the competition by third parties. In 2023, altogether 4,075 small- and medium-sized enterprises as well as banks and municipalities were nominated for the business prize on a nation-wide scale. After reaching the jury level, about 100 jurors organized in twelve regional juries finally decide which firms or institutions are awarded one of the desired prizes. The jurors are subject to own Rules of Procedure as well as a Corporate Governance Code and act under a certified quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.

In the region of Lower Saxony/Bremen, bema GmbH Maschinenfabrik convinced and, after having being honoured as Finalist 2019, was awarded the Grand Prize for Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises this year.

Within the framework of the awards gala for the six competition regions of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony/Bremen, Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein/Hamburg on Saturday, 23 September 2023, Sonja Koopmann received on behalf of bema GmbH Maschinenfabrik one of three prize-winner statues in the region of Lower Saxony/Bremen.
